Shell
The original sketch for this piece was done while I was in Nantucket last summer. One thing that inspired this was the perfection of shells. While this shell was broken and no longer perfect it still caught my eye. This piece encouraged me to think about the sources of my materials. While the paint I bought without considering the source, the material I painted on was reused. It is a ceramic bat used for throwing on the wheel. After it broke, my mom could not use it so I decided to give it a new purpose. Even if I don’t choose to radically shift my materials to be completely reused or recycled, I think it is important to be aware of the sources of materials being used and if there is a more eco-friendly option. Speaking to one of the Prescott Visiting Artists, Mary Mattingly, inspired me to be more conscious of my materials even if in a small way. The board used for “Californian” was also reused.
